 Спустя год после дебютной пластинки Journey выпустили свой второй альбом. К тому времени произошли замены в составе. Бывший коллега бас-гитариста Росса Вэлори, ритм-гитарист Джордж Тикнер, автор блистательного инструментала «Topaz» с первого альбома Journey, ушёл из группы. Но согласился стать соавтором двух песен.
И что же мы видим? По общему мнению, здесь группа нащупывает более коммерческий подход. С одной стороны, на альбоме действительно есть потенциальные хиты, такие, как «On a Saturday Night», который может дать фору любой их вещи после 1977 года. С другой стороны, прогрессивность, «артовость» группы поддерживается на должном уровне. Возьмите, к примеру, вещь, написанную в соавторстве с Тикнером – «I'm Gonna Leave You», «Midnight Dreamer» с дублированным и «приторможенным» вокалом Роли в середине. Но, конечно, заглавный трэк - подлинное украшение альбома. Он вполне мог бы стать большим хит-синглом a la «Hey Jude». Кстати, о The Beatles. Как вы уже заметили, на альбоме есть кавер на песню Джорджа Харрисона «It's All too Much». Сработана песня в типичном для Journey (разумеется, ранних) ключе. И на альбоме есть ещё два эпических трэка – «Anyway» и «You're on Your Own», соавтором последней также выступил Тикнер.
У Роли очень сочный, специфичный голос. Очень плохо, что он ушёл из Journey по завершении 1980 года. Его замена - Джонатан Кейн - не будет плохим клавишником, он будет другим, однако Роли унесет с собой свой шарм. Но это будет потом. |
