30 Seconds to Mars released its self-titled debut album in 2002, offering up a bold experiment in atmosphere and imagination. Emerging seemingly overnight, the progressive-leaning, multi-faceted, art-rock outfit had actually spent a better part of a decade on the road and literally years in the studio with legendary producer Bob Ezrin, who joined the band in bringing their vision to fruition. With the release of this project, sometimes called "Welcome to the Universe", they traveled the world, played over 300 shows and eventually began writing new material along the way.
Only people hiding under rocks the last couple of years haven’t noticed VOLBEAT in the musical landscape. The impressive success and recognition that the band enjoyed on the first album ”The Strength / The Sound / The Songs” in 2005 and 2006 is next to nothing compared to the explosive impact VOLBEAT had in 2007 with the follow-up ”Rock The Rebel / Metal The Devil”. From having played small to mid-sized venues in Denmark VOLBEAT found themselves on the biggest stages and festivals. The audience was eager to experience the sheer live energy that VOLBEAT’s music radiates.
A collaboration between Homme, Jones and Grohl was first publicly mentioned by Grohl in a 2005 interview with Mojo, in which he declared "The next project that I'm trying to initiate involves me on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, and John Paul Jones playing bass. That’s the next album. That wouldn’t suck." Of the nascent project, Homme's wife Brody Dalle commented in July 2009 that "I'm not at liberty to talk about it but I think [the project] is pretty fucking amazing. Just beats and sounds like you’ve never heard before." English music magazine NME reported in July 2009 that the trio had begun recording in Los Angeles.
